TEACHING STATEMENT

Humans are complex; we are mind, body, and spirit. I believe that learning should include all of the above. The mind creates and imagines; the body is the outlet for the ideas; and the spirit brings emotion and passion.

The main objective in the classroom is to make sure that those in the classroom, both teacher and student, have respect for one another. A place where the students aren't scared to ask questions, a place where they can push themselves, and a place where they will not feel judged. Next, I introduce them to several different genres and different levels of dance. I do this by showing visual demonstrations and giving clear verbal instructions while still allowing the students to add their own twists. Students are encouraged to create and work together, as well as give constructive criticism. The physical part of dancing will not be the only thing that my students will learn; they will also be taught the dance history of every genre they are taught so that they may have an understanding and appreciation of said genre. My teaching style consists of a serious teaching environment that is humorous, friendly, and energetic.

I approach my teaching as a way to give my students confidence and courage. I teach the students preparedness for the dance world outside of the studio as well as empower other students.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

As a choreographer, I push myself to think outside the box, by reevaluating what im thinking and trying a different approach sometimes even thinking about something I wouldn't normally do. I create a welcoming and friendly environment in which my dancers feel supported and are not afraid to speak up, ask questions, or ask for clarity I do this by letting my students know that everyone learns differently and that there's no specific way in learning. My work begins with a connection to music and then plays with movement in no specific way. I move in a way that makes my body feel good and elicits some sort of emotion which can be happiness, excitement, sadness, or anger. The most important part is that I am having fun while I am dancing because if im just dancing to do it I no longer feel joy for it, at that point why am I dancing if im not having fun. Dance comes from a place of emotion and needs to be expressed with love and light. it allows us to say what we can't with words.
